Information Technology for the Real World
We need to remember that few organisations wish to be Information Technology centres. They have completely separate and diverse aims, like maximising their effectiveness (that's profit for a business) or minimising costs, probably both. What we (in IT) can do is help them realise these aims. Information Technology is just another tool to facilitate competitive advantage.
Most people don't care what technologies are employed, they really are only interested in results and can you fault that attitude? I can't. The best that Information Technology can hope for is to 'make a difference' which, incidentaly, will also add greatly to the self esteem and confidence of all involved.
Over the years I have enjoyed many roles within the Information Technology business and have delivered many solutions including but not limited to:
- Data Warehouse flexible reporting
- Marketing campaign analysis
- Local Area Network (LAN) configuration and management
- Computer Network Cabling (cat5e/cat6) installation
- Web site hosting
- Web site building
- Search engine optimisation
- Client Server (OLTP) database systems
- Middle tier (middleware) components
- Data driven web sites
- Office automation
- Direct Marketing campaigns
- Call centre response handling
- Fulfilment management

Lately I have been concerning myself with the number of broken and inaccessible web pages there are on the web. You'll find some notes and useful links that address web accessibility issues here.
